Privacy, the short version.

Birthday Deals Australia is a directory. We don't run the loyalty programs, and we don't need your birthday to show you who's giving away free chips. Here's what we do — and don't — keep about you.

01The 60-second summary

We are a directory. You don't need an account to use us, and you don't have to tell us your birthday to see who's giving away free chips. The only personal information we hold is what you give us — your email if you subscribe to the newsletter, or a message you send us — plus aggregate, non-identifying analytics about which pages get read.

Your saved deals and any reminder settings (including a birthday date you enter for notifications) are stored only in your own browser. We can't see them, and clearing your browser data deletes them.

Plain English: if you read the site without subscribing, we know roughly nothing about you.

02What we collect

Information you choose to give us

  • Email address, if you subscribe to the newsletter.
  • The contents of any message you send through the contact form.

Information collected automatically

  • Aggregate analytics — we use Google Analytics 4 and Vercel Analytics to understand page views, referrers, approximate (country-level) location and device type. These providers may set cookies to do this.
  • Standard server logs — our host records request metadata such as IP address, user agent and request time, retained for a short period for security and abuse prevention.

Stored in your browser, not on our servers

Saved deals
localStorage — your list of favourited offers.
Reminder settings
localStorage — notification preferences and any birthday date you enter for reminders. Never transmitted to us.

03What we never collect

  • Payment details — we don't process payments.
  • Government identifiers, tax numbers, or any sensitive information as defined by the Privacy Act.
  • Cross-site advertising profiles or fingerprinting signals built by us.

04How we use what we have

  • To send you the newsletter you subscribed to, and nothing else.
  • To understand which articles and deals get read, so we can prune dead ones and add useful ones.
  • To respond when you write to us.
  • To keep the site secure and operational.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your information, and we do not send marketing on behalf of third parties.

05Sharing and third parties

The only third parties involved in running the site are:

Hosting
Vercel — serves the site and records request metadata.
Forms & email
Formspree — delivers newsletter signups and contact messages to us.
Analytics
Google Analytics 4 and Vercel Analytics — aggregate usage measurement.

We may disclose information if compelled by a valid Australian legal request, and we will tell you about it where lawfully possible.

06Cookies and storage

We use localStorage for the saved deals and reminder settings described above. None of this is sent to our servers; it lives in your browser.

Our analytics providers (Google Analytics and Vercel) may set cookies to measure aggregate traffic. You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings; the site still works without them.

07Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles you can ask us to:

  • Confirm what information we hold about you.
  • Correct it, if it's wrong.
  • Delete it (typically: unsubscribe from the newsletter, which removes your email).
  • Complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) if you're unhappy with our response.

Get in touch through our contact formand we'll respond within 14 days.

08Security and retention

We hold as little as we can. Newsletter subscriber emails are retained until you unsubscribe. Server logs are kept for a short period. Contact messages are kept for as long as needed to resolve your enquiry, then deleted.

We use commercially reasonable measures to protect data in transit and at rest, but no system is perfectly secure — please don't send us anything sensitive you wouldn't write on a postcard.

09Children

The site is intended for a general audience, but we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us and we'll remove it.

10Changes to this policy

When we make a material change we'll update the Last reviewed date at the top and, for subscribers, mention it in the next newsletter.
