Make the budget yours

Add your guest count and actual costs, then separate what you pay from your guests' contributions. The spreadsheet includes formulas and a worked example.

Choose a 21st birthday plan

The best 21st birthday ideas fit your friends, your space and the amount you can comfortably spend. Start with the guest list and who is paying, then choose the activity. These three plans cover a small home gathering, an activity afternoon and a larger celebration.

PlanPeople, including youExample totalPayment arrangement
Backyard food and games8$237.50Host pays; guests need not spend
Mini golf, food and transport8 adults$544 Mon–Wed / $568 Thu–SunAgree a split before booking
Larger home celebration30$688.50Host pays; borrowed furniture

All amounts are AUD. Product and ticket prices were checked on 9 October 2026. Food, drinks, cake, transport and contingency figures are sample allowances, not retailer quotes. Totals exclude alcohol, gifts, delivery and accommodation. The birthday person is included in every headcount.

Use the editable budget worksheet to replace our allowances with your own quotes, or print the A4 worksheet. You do not need to buy a theme or join a club to use these plans.

Plan 1: A backyard birthday for eight

For a small group, give the afternoon a simple shape: shared food, a game or playlist, then cake. Set a start and finish time, borrow chairs and serving dishes, and ask a friend to organise one activity. A photo quiz, cards or a favourite film gives everyone something to do without hiring entertainment.

ItemQuantity / allowanceCost
Food8 × $15$120
Soft drinks and water8 × $5$40
CakeOne allowance$35
Optional Kmart suppliesOne of each product shown below$17.50
ContingencySet aside$25
Total paid by host8 people$237.50

The food allowance could cover homemade pizzas, wraps or a barbecue with a vegetarian option. Price your actual menu before inviting people; the table does not claim those meals will fit every supermarket basket. If guests bring a dish, agree it first and remove its cost from the host's worksheet.

The supplies basket includes a single tablecloth suitable for a six-seat table; it is for the serving table, not eight place settings. Reuse cups, plates and cutlery. Plan enough indoor space for all eight if rain arrives, rather than relying on a last-minute marquee purchase.

Plan 2: Mini golf and food with eight friends

An activity booking is useful when you do not have a place to host. As a specific Melbourne example, Holey Moley Melbourne CBD lists nine holes at $23 per person Monday–Wednesday and $26 Thursday–Sunday. Eight tickets cost $184 or $208. Other locations and dates may differ.

ItemQuantity / allowanceCost
Nine holes8 × $23 weekday / $26 Thu–Sun$184 / $208
Food and soft drinks afterwards8 × $30 allowance$240
Transport8 × $10 allowance$80
ContingencyShared allowance$40
Whole-group total8 adults$544 / $568

Choose the payment arrangement before buying tickets. If you cover everyone's golf, the buffer and your own food and transport, your host allowance is $264 weekday or $288 Thu–Sun. The other seven each allow $40 for their own meal and transport. Those contributions total $280; they are part of the group total, not an extra charge on top.

The operator suggests 25–40 minutes for nine holes and requires valid ID after 5pm. Under-18 guests can attend only within the venue's permitted times. The golf area is upstairs without a lift, so confirm accessibility before booking. Our Melbourne birthday guide has other local options if this venue does not suit your group.

Plan 3: A larger home celebration for 30

A bigger guest list needs a suitable space before it needs decorations. Check the household agrees to hosting, that seating and toilets are practical, and that your rain backup can hold the same group. If not, reduce the headcount or get a venue quote before sending invitations; this budget assumes a free home venue.

ItemQuantity / allowanceCost
Buffet food30 × $15$450
Soft drinks and water30 × $3$90
CakeOne allowance$60
SuppliesBase $17.50 basket plus a second napkin pack$18.50
ContingencySet aside$70
Total paid by host30 people$688.50

Two packs provide 60 napkins, allowing two per person. Borrow seating, plates, glasses and additional table covers; the single purchased cloth covers only one table. The buffet allowance could be used for tray bakes, salads, bread and a separate dietary option, after checking your own ingredient prices.

Give two friends concrete jobs: one handles music and any short speeches, another helps serve food and clear dishes. Tell guests whether partners and younger siblings are included. If your home cannot accommodate 30 people safely and comfortably, the eight-person plan is a complete celebration in its own right.

What to buy, borrow and skip

Prices checked 9 October 2026, excluding delivery. Stock and prices can change. Borrow or reuse supplies where possible.

The optional supplies shown here total $17.50 for one of each, before delivery. Product prices were checked on 9 October 2026; local stock and prices can change. The cover shows a styling idea, rather than the exact contents of this basket.

Borrow reusable tableware and chairs first. Choose a bunting banner or a few balloons if you want decoration; you do not have to buy both. The balloon pack does not include a pump or helium. Skip personalised favours if they do not serve your plan, and put that money towards food or transport instead.

Count pack sizes against your guest list. One 30-pack of napkins covers eight people comfortably; the 30-person example uses two packs. If buying supplies online, add delivery to the worksheet or confirm a convenient collection option before counting the basket as complete.

Organise it without last-minute surprises

  • ☐Agree the guest limit, venue and payment split before invitations.
  • ☐Check dietary needs, accessibility and whether younger guests are attending.
  • ☐Confirm the activity's price, date, booking conditions and any fees.
  • ☐Set an RSVP deadline before you buy food or finalise tickets.
  • ☐Arrange transport home and an indoor alternative for outdoor plans.
  • ☐Save receipts and replace each allowance with its actual cost.

Keep your own birthday rewards separate from the group budget. A free meal, voucher or activity reward may apply only to the eligible birthday person, and group bookings can have different conditions. Read the birthday reward fine print before treating a reward as confirmed savings.

Find local options and birthday rewards

For actual places to go, use our Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide birthday guides. They cover local activities and dinner ideas, so you can adapt the plan without guessing that every city offers the same prices.

Check food rewards and entertainment offers for your own birthday. The reward signup planner shows recorded joining deadlines; it is separate from the celebration budget worksheet. For another kind of gathering, our 40th birthday guide includes a seated long lunch and a rail day trip.

Frequently asked questions

What do people usually do for their 21st birthday?

A home gathering, shared meal or group activity are useful starting points. Choose the guest count and budget before deciding how formal it should be. A small celebration can still include cake, photographs and a short toast without becoming a large event.

What is a traditional 21st birthday gift?

A keepsake, photograph collection or personal letter can mark the occasion without an expensive purchase. There is no compulsory gift or spending amount in these plans. Ask about the person's interests, and keep gifts separate from the cost of attending an activity.

How do I make my daughter's 21st birthday special?

Ask whether she wants family, friends or both involved, and agree the budget together. A favourite meal, messages from people who cannot attend or a playlist she chooses can make the plan personal. Offer help with food or transport rather than assuming she wants a surprise party.

What can someone do for a 21st without drinking?

Use the mini-golf afternoon, a picnic, games night or home meal as the main activity. Every sample budget here uses soft drinks and water. Check the venue's entry rules even when nobody plans to drink, especially if younger relatives are coming.
